Scrap Mechanic

DE EN

"A physics workshop worth living in, a survival mode still half-built"

About

Scrap Mechanic is a physics-driven building sandbox where you bolt blocks, gears, thrusters and logic parts together into whatever vehicle or contraption you can imagine. Creative mode hands you unlimited parts and a flat playground; Survival mode drops you on a crash-landed world where you gather resources, manage hunger and thirst, and fend off waves of hostile Farmbots that raid the crops you tend on Market Day. Chapter 2 and the 1.0 release, arriving after roughly a decade in early access, expand the survival story, terrain, and enemy types. You play solo or in online co-op, in first or third person.

Verdict

As a creative sandbox, Scrap Mechanic earns its reputation: the physics are dependable, the building freedom is huge, and people keep coming back to it years later for good reason. Survival is the weaker half, grindy at the start, clunky in combat, and stopping short of anything resembling an endgame. The 1.0 badge oversells the polish, with save crashes and rough performance on big creations still in the way. Buy it for the workshop, not the story, and it delivers.

You'll like it if …

  • +You want a physics toybox where the fun is engineering your own solutions
  • +You'll happily sink hundreds of hours into vehicles and automation with no win condition in sight
  • +You have a friend to build with in online co-op

You'll dislike it if …

  • You want a structured survival campaign with clear goals and an endgame
  • Grinding resources before the good tools unlock puts you off
  • Frame drops and the odd crash on a 1.0 release are dealbreakers

Breakdown

Gameplay
  • +The physics engine is the real draw: bolt parts together and they behave with a weight and consistency that makes building vehicles genuinely satisfying
  • +Creative freedom is close to total, from working suspension to fully automated machines that actually run
  • +Wedges, helical and rack-and-pinion gears open up mechanisms that older versions couldn't manage
  • Survival combat is stiff: no block, no dodge, you backpedal from Farmbots and hope
  • Vehicles slide around on slopes like they're on ice, which undercuts the thing the game is best at
  • Progression in survival is unclear early on and the hunger-and-thirst upkeep gets in the way more than it adds
Depth
  • +The building side barely runs out: players with a thousand-plus hours still describe firing up new hovercraft and automation projects
  • +Logic gates, sensors and gearing give tinkerers a proper sandbox to solve their own problems in
  • +Survival layers resource management and farm defence on top of the creative toolkit
  • Survival has no endgame, no way to win, no armour or health upgrades to build toward
  • The resource grind stretches into hours before you can build anything interesting
  • Long-promised features like terraforming in creative are still absent
Atmosphere
  • +The crash-survivor premise and the escalating farm raids give survival a light sense of direction
  • Story is thin and easy to lose the thread of; several players report wandering with no idea what to do next
Presentation
  • +Clean, friendly art direction that suits the toybox tone
  • +Sound and music land well and hold up across long sessions
  • Performance collapses with large creations, frame rates tanking exactly when your ambition pays off
  • Entering warehouses can trigger lag and a black screen for several seconds
  • The glass diffraction effect looks nice but hurts visibility through windows
Polish
  • +Controller support finally arrives with 1.0
  • +The building interface itself is legible once you learn its logic
  • Keybinding is broken in places: the numpad reads as duplicate keys and rebinding is restricted
  • Save corruption and crashes hit some players on the 1.0 launch, kicking them straight to the desktop
  • Survival has no pause menu and won't let you swap item slots while sprinting
  • No highlight on interactable objects and a weak tutorial leave new players guessing
