Sandustry

DE EN

"A brilliant physics factory that ends just as it gets going."

About

Sandustry is a 2D factory automation game set in a fully destructible world where every pixel is a simulated physical material. You dig through sand, dirt, and rock to gather resources, then build conveyor belts and machines to process them into more advanced components. The main challenge comes from managing the flow of these granular materials, which behave like the sand in old physics-based browser games. As you play, you explore deeper to find ancient technology and upgrade your production lines.

Verdict

Sandustry's genius is in making every single pixel matter. Combining the automation of Factorio with the granular physics of Noita creates a sandbox that is a constant source of emergent problem-solving. Watching your carefully constructed belts ferry rivers of sand is a unique pleasure. While the Early Access tag shows in its limited content, the foundation here is so strong that it is an easy recommendation, even knowing you'll hit the end of the road too soon.

You'll like it if …

  • +You enjoy open-ended problem solving over rigid optimisation puzzles.
  • +The tactile feel of old 'powder' physics games appeals to you.
  • +You want a more relaxed, exploratory take on the factory genre.

You'll dislike it if …

  • You need hundreds of hours of content from your factory games.
  • Finishing a game in a dozen hours feels incomplete.
  • Unpredictable physics-based chaos frustrates you more than it entertains.

Breakdown

Gameplay
  • +The central loop of digging and processing pixel-by-pixel materials is immensely satisfying.
  • +Physics-based problem-solving offers a unique, creative alternative to rigid factory layouts.
  • The unpredictability of granular physics can lead to frustrating blockages.
  • Some core processes still require too much manual intervention for an automation game.
Depth
  • +Optimizing material flow around physical constraints provides an interesting strategic layer.
  • +Artifact puzzles offer a welcome break from pure production.
  • The current Early Access build is content-light; players can see everything in about 10 hours.
  • The tech tree is a straight line, lacking the complex byproducts that give other factory games longevity.
Atmosphere
  • +Exploration feels rewarding, with secrets to uncover in the destructible world.
  • Story elements are sparse and can appear out of order, feeling disjointed.
Presentation
  • +Watching thousands of individual pixels flow through your factory is the game's main visual draw.
  • +Sound design gives a tactile feel to every action.
  • Late-game factories with extensive physics calculations can cause significant framerate drops.
  • Some players report occasional crashes, particularly with complex builds.
Polish
  • +The core experience is remarkably stable and polished for an Early Access title.
  • The user interface can be unintuitive, with key mechanics poorly explained.
