"Hogwarts Looks Stunning – Underneath It's Just Generic Open-World Busywork"

About

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action RPG set in the 1890s wizarding world, where you play as a student attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You attend classes to learn spells, explore the castle and surrounding lands, complete quests for characters, and engage in real-time combat against magical creatures and dark wizards using your learned abilities.

Verdict

Hogwarts Legacy nails the fantasy of walking through Hogwarts and almost nothing underneath it. The combat sparkles for ten hours then runs out of ideas, the open world is Ubisoft busywork in a wizard hat, and the writing rarely rises above competent. If you grew up wanting the acceptance letter, the atmosphere alone might carry you. If you want systems that deepen as you play, look elsewhere.

You'll like it if …

  • +the Harry Potter fantasy of wandering Hogwarts is enough to carry dozens of hours
  • +you savour atmosphere, detailed worlds, and a score built on familiar themes

You'll dislike it if …

  • you want combat and systems that keep evolving past the opening hours
  • you play for choices and consequences that reshape your run
  • story and memorable characters are what pull you through an RPG

Breakdown

Gameplay
  • +Spell combos and counters are satisfying for the first stretch of the game
  • Combat exposes its whole hand early then repeats the same enemies and rhythm
  • Difficulty inflates enemy health bars rather than introducing new threats or tactical demands
Depth
  • +A hundred hours of content available if the atmosphere grabs you
  • Open world leans on Merlin Trials and collectible filler that wears thin fast
  • House differences and build variety are dangled but the story is linear and renders meaningful choice almost powerless
  • Very little reason to engage with content twice
Atmosphere
  • Dialogue is flat and plot twists land with a thud
  • Characters struggle to be memorable
  • Your choices, including the Unforgivable Curses, change almost nothing
Presentation
  • +Hogwarts itself is alive with detail: shifting staircases, common rooms, and the Scottish Highlands stretching beyond the castle all sell the fantasy
  • +Soundtrack leans on familiar themes and adds its own, with several players singling out the music as a highlight
Polish
  • Crashes, lag spikes, and stutter persist across hardware, with three years of patches not fully ironing out stability issues
